Why New Year’s RESOLUTIONS are actually a Good thing!
The New Year provides the perfect opportunity to access how we are doing in the 8 pillars of health. What areas are you struggling with? What areas are you doing well? What are your core values? Are you leading a life that agrees with your values? If you eat healthy and exercise while this is important for health; you cannot achieve health if you neglect the other pillars of health.
There are many reasons that people do not stick to their New Year’s Resolutions
- People often try to change too much too quickly. To avoid this pitfall, make a list of the areas that you want to work on. Pick 1-3 items from the list that you want to make your priority. Keep the list. In a few months when these changes have become habits, add on another one or two items from the list.
- Another reason people often fail to achieve the goals- it actually is not important to the person. For instance, I knew for years that I had food intolerances. However until my health was drastically being impacted by them, I was not able to make the change.
- Support is critical if you want to make your new year's resolutions into habits. Get an accountability buddy, join a support group, do it with friends or famiy. A Health coach is also a great resource- They will provide accountability, education and support as you work on your goals.
- Environment is also important. I have a huge sweet tooth. When going off of sugar it helps me to not have bowls of candy laying around. if you are giving up drinking- maybe avoid alcohol in the house or going to the places you normslly drink. Our friends and family can be positive or negative influences on achieving goals. Surround yourself with people who will support you in your endevours.
- Make sure you have the equipment necessary to be successful in reaching your goals and keep it in a convenient location. For instance if you are planning to ride your bike- have it where you hace easy access.
